We’ve seen it from the air thanks to Skycam 9. Now we’ve seen it from the ground.

Six Flags Great America opened the gates to us yesterday for a special look at the construction of their brand new roller coaster. It’s a dive coaster they’re calling Wrath of Rakshasa. Manufactured by B&M, dive coasters take riders ride up to the edge of the first drop and hold them there for a few seconds, before letting them go straight to the ground.

We spoke with Six Flags Great America’s Park President John Krajnak about how the construction progress was going. A mild winter is a good thing and work has been progressing nicely, says the park. They have about a dozen pieces of track left to assemble, but much more work needs to be done from there. The ride’s station, where guests load the coaster trains, is currently being built. Then there is the process of designing and building the queue where thousands of eager riders will line up to take the plunge.

Wrath of Rakshasa boasts numerous records for dive coasters. It has a 96 degree beyond vertical drop, the steepest in the world for a dive coaster. It will take riders upside down five times, also a record.

The park is still keeping a few things under wraps, like all of the extra theming we might see with the ride. We also don’t have an official opening date. Right now, they’re just saying “early summer” as construction continues.

Six Flags Great America opens for the season on April 18th. You’ll be able to get an up close look at the new ride then. For now, enjoy some photos I took during the tour below.

A story will air on the WGN Morning News this Friday and will be posted above afterwards. You can also see a longer version of our interviews and some extra video in this clip here:
